چکیده

One recently reported approach to flat panel autostereoscopic 3D displays under investigation at Sharp Laboratories of Europe Ltd. (SLE) uses a high precision patterned optical half wave retarder combined with a re-configurable output polariser to “develop” a parallax barrier structure attached to an LCD display panel. Such a barrier is invisible without the polariser and thus a 2D/3D configurable display can be formed. A discussion of cross talk and white level variation in the 3D mode will be made with reference to Fresnel diffraction in the display. A model will be presented and justified in the light of the panel geometry. This model will be compared with measured cross talk, window structure and white level variation in such a 2D/3D configurable system. The implications that the shape of the transmitting profile has on 3D-display cross talk will be discussed.

Switchable 2D/3D Display – Solid Phase Liquid Crystal Microlens Array

A new solid phase liquid crystal microlens array has been applied to Polarisation Activated Microlens flat panel displays that can be electrically reconfigured between a full performance 2D mode and a low cross talk autostereoscopic 3D mode. The solid phase microlens array enables significant reductions in device thickness and improved ruggedness compared to nematic phase liquid crystalline mic...

Observer Tracking Autostereoscopic 3D Display Systems

This paper presents a range of new autostereoscopic 3D display systems based on Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology in which observer tracking has been used to allow comfortable viewing freedom. For high image quality the Twin-LCD display has been used while other work has been in progress with flat panel displays using a new arrangement of LCD pixels. For each system the observer tracking ...

Guest Editor's Introduction: The Ultimate Display--What Will It Be?

IN THIS ISSUE Autostereoscopic displays provide 3D perception without the need for special glasses or other head gear. These displays have become available for the consumer market during the past decade, and they are now used in several application domains, such as science, medicine, and entertainment. In “Autostereoscopic 3D Displays,” Neil A. Dodgson provides a general review of autostereosco...

The influence of autostereoscopic 3D displays on subsequent task performance

Viewing 3D content on an autostereoscopic is an exciting experience. This is partly due to the fact that the 3D effect is seen without glasses. Nevertheless, it is an unnatural condition for the eyes as the depth effect is created by the disparity of the left and the right view on a flat screen instead of having a real object at the corresponding location. Thus, it may be more tiring to watch 3...

Three-Dimensional Interaction with Autostereoscopic Displays

The broad goals of this project are to develop new techniques of human interaction with stereo displays, particularly autostereoscopic (AS) displays. Autostereoscopic displays produce a 3D visual sensation to one or more observers without the use of glasses, goggles, helmets, or headtracking. We are developing new techniques for interactive input and manipulation of threedimensional data using ...
